This guide is a high-yield memory card for adult vital signs and common lab reference ranges used in NHA CCMA prep. It is written for candidates who already know the exam map and need fast recall of in-range vs out-of-range values, plus the first MA action when a result is abnormal. These ranges are study references commonly used in medical assistant training and exam prep. They are not a substitute for your clinic's critical-call list or the current NHA CCMA Test Plan. Facility protocols and published sources can differ by a few points. On the exam, extreme out-of-range values and the correct escalation action matter more than arguing over a one-point edge case.

What lab and vital sign values should I memorize for the CCMA?

Memorize adult vitals first, then the labs that change first actions: hemoglobin, hematocrit, WBC, platelets, potassium, sodium, fasting glucose, HbA1c, INR/PT, lipids, and urinalysis basics. The NHA CCMA Test Plan expects you to recognize in-range and out-of-range vitals and laboratory values and to document and report appropriately. It does not publish one single official numeric table for every analyte.

Pro Tip: Pair every number with an action. "K+ 6.5" is not enough. "K+ 6.5: stop routine workflow, notify provider per protocol" is exam-ready.

Blood pressure categories above follow American Heart Association staging language commonly taught in current MA materials (normal, elevated, Stage 1, Stage 2, crisis).

How do pediatric vital signs differ from adult ranges?

Younger patients normally have faster heart and respiratory rates and lower blood pressure. Exam stems often use an adult-looking number on a toddler (or the reverse) as a trap. Use this study card for quick comparison; pediatric charts in textbooks can vary slightly by age band.

Rule of thumb: the younger the patient, the faster the pulse and respirations, and the lower the expected blood pressure. Always read the age in the stem before labeling a value abnormal.

How should I use these numbers on CCMA exam questions?

  1. Read the stem for who (adult vs pediatric) and what (fasting vs random, male vs female).
  2. Classify the value as in-range, mildly out-of-range, or critical/extreme.
  3. Choose the first MA action: verify identifiers/technique when relevant, document, notify the provider, hold independent treatment advice.
  4. Do not diagnose or prescribe from a lab value alone.

Common miss patterns:

  • Treating an extreme abnormal as "recheck next visit"
  • Giving diet or OTC advice instead of notifying on a critical Hgb or K+
  • Mixing therapeutic INR (often 2 to 3 on warfarin) with normal INR (about 0.8 to 1.2)
  • Forgetting Hgb/Hct sex-specific ranges
  • Ignoring SpO2 near 90% because the patient "looks okay" in the stem

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NHA publish one official list of every normal lab value?

No single public numeric table covers every analyte as "the only correct range." The Test Plan requires recognition of in-range and out-of-range vitals and labs and correct reporting behavior. Use a consistent study set like this one, then follow clinic protocol on the job.

What potassium value should I treat as abnormal on the CCMA?

Treat values below 3.5 mEq/L or above 5.0 mEq/L as out of typical adult reference range. Markedly elevated results (often around 6.0 mEq/L or higher in exam stems) usually require immediate provider notification because of arrhythmia risk.

What hemoglobin is critical for an adult?

Exam stems often use values near 7 g/dL or lower as critically low relative to adult female (about 12 to 16 g/dL) or male (about 13 to 18 g/dL) ranges. The first MA action is prompt notification per protocol, not independent treatment.

Is SpO2 of 92% an emergency?

It is below the usual 95% to 100% study range and needs attention. Values approaching or below 90% are commonly framed as urgent hypoxemia in prep materials. Assess the patient, follow clinic protocol, and notify the provider.

Should I memorize pediatric vital signs too?

Yes. Use the pediatric comparison table in this guide. Adult ranges dominate many stems, but newborn and infant rates appear often. Do not apply adult bradycardia or tachypnea labels to a newborn without checking age-specific expectations.

How is INR different when a patient is on warfarin?

A person not on anticoagulation is often near 0.8 to 1.2. Therapeutic targets on warfarin are commonly near 2.0 to 3.0 unless the provider ordered a different range. Do not call a therapeutic 2.5 "normal" or "critical" without reading the therapy context in the stem.

How should I study these values without only rereading tables?

Cover the table for 10 minutes, then open practice questions and force retrieval. Log every miss with the number and the action. Re-test the same miss within 48 hours. Passive reading alone does not transfer to timed stems.
