California CNA Exam Prep: Requirements & Study Path
Supplemental written exam prep aligned with the NNAAP content outline. Confirm training hours, skills checklists, and registry steps in your official Credentia handbook and California CDPH materials.
How CNA testing works in California
Typical vendor path: Credentia / NNAAP. MedCertPrep is independent exam prep, not a state registry. Use the official resources section for eligibility, fees, and skills wording.
- Most California nurse aide candidates use Credentia for the NNAAP written (or oral) exam and the skills evaluation. Start at Credentia Test Takers, choose California, and open the Candidate Handbook.
- Skills Evaluation: you typically demonstrate five skills in about 30 minutes. Hand hygiene is always included, plus one measurement skill (for example pulse, respirations, blood pressure, urinary output, or weight). Critical Element Steps in bold must be done correctly.
- If you fail either the written/oral exam or the skills evaluation three times, Credentia handbook rules require completing another training program and retaking both parts, not only the failed part. Confirm current attempt rules in your handbook.
- After you pass both parts, your name is placed on the California Nursing Assistant Registry. Certificates are commonly valid for 24 months from the issue date. CDPH handles licensing, name/address changes after testing, and reciprocity questions.
- MedCertPrep written practice follows the official NNAAP written blueprint. Skills performance is scored from the California Skills Listing in the Credentia handbook, not from this app.
Official California CNA resources
Read these official pages first. We summarize what each covers and link out. We do not copy full skills checklists; scored steps belong on the vendor site. Fees, eligibility, skills wording, attempt rules, and handbook articles can change without notice. Always confirm the latest details on the official site before you register or rehearse. If a deep link does not open, start from the official homepage below and look up the current document there.
