How CNA testing works in Texas
Typical vendor path: Prometric. MedCertPrep is independent exam prep, not a state registry. Use the official resources section for eligibility, fees, and skills wording.
- Texas uses Prometric for the Competency Evaluation Program (Clinical Skills Test plus Written or Oral Test). HHSC maintains the Nurse Aide Registry. Start with HHSC Become a CNA and complete your application in TULIP before Prometric scheduling.
- Written/Oral Test (per Texas CIB): typically 60 multiple-choice questions in about 90 minutes. The content outline is the Prometric Texas outline in the Candidate Information Bulletin. It is not the same document as the Credentia 2024 NNAAP written outline used in many other states.
- Clinical Skills Test: you are scored on five skills. While you perform three assigned skills, you are also scored on handwashing and Indirect Care (rights, communication, safety/comfort, infection control). Handwashing is often evaluated at the start and may not be separately prompted. Use the official Prometric clinical skills checklist.
- You generally must pass both exams within 24 months of completing training, with up to three attempts per exam part before retrain rules apply. Confirm live attempt and absence rules in the Texas CIB.
- After you pass both parts, results go to HHSC for Texas Nurse Aide Registry listing. Certificates are commonly valid for two years from issue. MedCertPrep is supplemental practice for overlapping nurse aide themes; it is not a Texas-specific Prometric item bank.
