New York CNA Exam Prep: Requirements & Study Path

Supplemental CNA study for New York nursing home nurse aide candidates on the Prometric pathway. Confirm NYSDOH training rules, the Candidate Information Bulletin outline, skills checklists, and Nurse Aide Registry steps on official Prometric and New York State pages.

How CNA testing works in New York

Typical vendor path: Prometric. MedCertPrep is independent exam prep, not a state registry. Use the official resources section for eligibility, fees, and skills wording.

  • New York uses Prometric for the Nursing Home Nurse Aide Competency Examination (Clinical Skills plus Written or Oral) and to manage the NYS Nursing Home Nurse Aide Registry (NAR). Start with the Prometric New York Nurse Aide hub and the Candidate Information Bulletin before you apply.
  • Written/Oral exam (per NY bulletin): typically 60 multiple-choice questions in about 90 minutes. The content outline is the Prometric New York outline in the bulletin. It is not the same document as the Credentia 2024 NNAAP written outline used in many other states.
  • Clinical Skills exam: you are scored on five skills. While you perform three assigned skills, you are also scored on handwashing and Indirect Care. Handwashing is often evaluated at the start and may not be separately prompted. Use the official Prometric clinical skills checklist linked from the New York hub.
  • For common new-nurse-aide routes, you generally must pass both exam parts within two years of training completion, with up to three attempts per part. Confirm live attempt and absence rules in the New York bulletin for your certification route.
  • After you pass both parts, you receive a certificate/wallet card and are listed on the NAR (certificates are commonly valid for 24 months). MedCertPrep is supplemental practice for overlapping nurse aide themes; it is not a New York-specific Prometric item bank.

Official New York CNA resources

Read these official pages first. We summarize what each covers and link out. We do not copy full skills checklists; scored steps belong on the vendor site. Fees, eligibility, skills wording, attempt rules, and handbook articles can change without notice. Always confirm the latest details on the official site before you register or rehearse. If a deep link does not open, start from the official homepage below and look up the current document there.

Study on MedCertPrep

New York written items follow the Prometric New York Candidate Information Bulletin outline (typically 60 questions). MedCertPrep practice is NNAAP-structured supplemental prep for overlapping nurse aide themes (ADLs, safety, infection control, rights, reporting). It is not a New York Prometric clone bank. Skills steps come only from the official Prometric checklist.

Practice by nurse aide theme

These hubs use MedCertPrep's national CNA bank (organized in NNAAP-style domains). Themes overlap with New York written topics, but confirm domain weights and wording in the New York bulletin.

Study guides

Skills steps always defer to your New York Prometric checklist and bulletin. Start with the New York written mapping guide and skills guide, then use national method articles for rehearsal structure.
