CCMA vs CMA (AAMA): Which Medical Assistant Exam Should You Take?
CCMA vs CMA (AAMA) compared: issuing bodies, eligibility, exam format, passing scores, recertification, employer recognition, and how to choose before you apply.
By MedCertPrep Team · Updated September 11, 2026
CCMA and CMA (AAMA) are both national medical assistant credentials. They are not the same exam, not the same application, and not interchangeable certificates. This guide compares the NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and the AAMA Certified Medical Assistant, CMA (AAMA), at a practical level: eligibility, format, recognition, recertification, and how to choose before you pay a fee. It is written for students, career-school graduates, and working assistants who need a clear path. Confirm current rules on the NHA CCMA page and the AAMA certification page. If you already know you are sitting for NHA CCMA, start with CCMA requirements and the CCMA study guide.
MedCertPrep prepares candidates for the NHA CCMA blueprint. It is not AAMA CMA exam prep. Use this page to pick the credential, then study the outline that matches that credential.
What is the difference between CCMA and CMA (AAMA) in one sentence?
CCMA is awarded by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). CMA (AAMA) is awarded by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Both can support medical assistant hiring, but they have different eligibility gates, different exams, and no reciprocity between bodies.
How do CCMA and CMA (AAMA) compare side by side?
Use this table as a planning sheet, then verify every number on the official vendor site before you pay or schedule. Handbooks and fee schedules change.
| Feature | CCMA (NHA) | CMA (AAMA) |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Certified Clinical Medical Assistant | Certified Medical Assistant |
| Vendor | NHA CCMA certification | AAMA certification |
| Typical eligibility | High school diploma or GED (or scheduled completion under policy) plus an MA training program within the lookback window, or supervised MA work experience | Usually a student or graduate of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited medical assisting program. AAMA also publishes educator, prior-CMA, and Alternative Pathway routes. There is no standalone work-experience exam route |
| Commonly cited format | 180 questions (150 scored + 30 pretest), 3 hours | 200 questions (commonly described as 180 scored + 20 pretest). Confirm current timing on AAMA |
| Passing standard | Scaled 390 on a 200 to 500 scale | Scaled 405 on a 200 to 800 scale (AAMA scoring) |
| Delivery | School site, PSI center, or live remote proctoring where NHA offers it | AAMA-designated testing (commonly Prometric). Confirm on AAMA |
| Exam fee (commonly cited) | Check the current NHA fee schedule (often listed near $165) | AAMA commonly lists $125 for members and $250 for nonmembers. Some student/recent-graduate categories are $125. Confirm on AAMA eligibility |
| Recertification | Typically every 2 years, with CE (commonly 10 credits). Confirm on NHA | Every 60 months, by 60 CE units or by re-exam (AAMA recertification) |
| 2024 exam volume | NHA administered 78,681 CCMA exams in 2024, with an 81.38% pass rate and 233,190 active CCMAs as of Dec 31, 2024 (NHA 2024 pass rates) | AAMA reported 4,171 CMA (AAMA) exams from July 2024 to April 2025, including 2,680 first-time administrations and a 69% first-time pass rate, with 68,495 CMAs (AAMA) as of January 2026 (AAMA certification) |
Pro Tip: Start with eligibility, not reputation. If your program is not CAAHEP or ABHES accredited and you do not meet AAMA's other published routes, CMA (AAMA) is not an option no matter how often forums call it the "gold standard."
Who can sit for each exam?
Eligibility is the real fork. Most candidates do not get a free choice between the two credentials.
CCMA (NHA)
NHA requires a high school diploma or GED (or scheduled completion within NHA policy) plus a qualifying pathway. The common routes are:
- Complete a medical assistant training or education program within the last 5 years.
- Document supervised medical assisting work experience (commonly about 1 year within the last 3 years, or 2 years within the last 5 years).
Military medical training equivalent to medical assisting may also qualify under NHA rules. The training program does not have to be CAAHEP or ABHES accredited. Confirm documents, lookback windows, and military language in the current NHA Candidate Handbook and on CCMA requirements.
CMA (AAMA)
AAMA's primary route is a student or graduate of a medical assisting program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. Completing students may apply after classroom coursework is done (excluding practicum, per AAMA). Recent graduates are those who apply within 12 months of graduation.
AAMA also lists other routes on AAMA eligibility:
- Previously certified as a CMA (AAMA) and applying to recertify by exam
- Medical assisting educator meeting AAMA's hour and institutional-accreditation rules
- Alternative Pathway for graduates of certain postsecondary medical assisting or apprenticeship programs that meet AAMA criteria
Experience by itself does not create CMA (AAMA) exam eligibility. If your school was not CAAHEP or ABHES accredited, do not assume you can sit. Use AAMA's eligibility survey and, if relevant, the Alternative Pathway documentation list.
Quick decision map
| Your situation | Realistic next step |
|---|---|
| CAAHEP or ABHES graduate (or completing student) | You can usually sit for CMA (AAMA). You can also sit for CCMA if you want that credential instead or in addition |
| Non-CAAHEP/ABHES MA program within 5 years | CCMA is the usual national exam. Check AAMA Alternative Pathway only if your program may qualify |
| Supervised MA work, little or no formal program | CCMA experience pathway, if you meet NHA lookbacks and documentation |
| School already scheduled you for NHA | Take CCMA. Do not switch to AAMA unless you independently meet AAMA eligibility |
| Job posting says "CMA required" | Read whether they mean the AAMA credential specifically or any national MA certification. Ask HR before you change exams |
How do the exams differ in format and content?
CCMA (stronger certainty from NHA public materials used in this prep track):
- 180 multiple-choice questions
- 150 scored + 30 unscored pretest items mixed in and unlabeled
- 3 hours (about 1 minute per question)
- Passing scaled score 390 (range 200 to 500)
- Seven domains. Clinical Patient Care is 84 of 150 scored items (56%)
Full domain weights, pacing, and exam-day rules: CCMA exam format and passing score. Blueprint source: NHA CCMA Test Plan (2022).
CMA (AAMA) (confirm on AAMA before you memorize numbers):
- 200 questions on the CMA (AAMA) Certification Exam
- Scaled score range 200 to 800; minimum passing score 405
- Content follows the CMA (AAMA) exam content outline
- Candidate materials commonly describe timed segments. If AAMA locks sections, you cannot flag-and-return across the whole test the way CCMA's single block allows
The clinical skill set overlaps (vitals, infection control, injections, specimen handling, EKG support, HIPAA, terminology, administrative support). The weights, wording, and exam mechanics do not. Studying CCMA items for a CMA (AAMA) sitting, or the reverse, leaves gaps in timing strategy and domain emphasis.
| Content emphasis | CCMA (NHA 2022 test plan) | CMA (AAMA) |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical patient care | Largest block: 56% scored items, including vitals, general care, infection control, lab/POC, phlebotomy, EKG | Clinical Competency is the largest outline category (intake, safety, procedures, pharmacology, and related clinical tasks). Read the current AAMA outline for topic lists |
| Administrative work | Administrative Assisting is 12 scored items (8%) | Administrative content is a named outline area. AAMA recertification even requires CE across general, administrative, and clinical buckets |
| Foundational science / A&P | Foundational Knowledge 10%; A&P about 5% | Terminology, anatomy, and related knowledge sit inside the AAMA outline rather than as NHA's seven-domain map |
| Law / ethics / communication | Separate NHA domains (law/ethics about 5%; communication 8%) | Covered inside AAMA general and clinical topic lists. Do not map 1:1 to NHA domain codes |
Key implication: if you will take CMA (AAMA), use AAMA's current content outline as the source of truth. MedCertPrep's practice hubs follow NHA domain slugs such as Clinical Patient Care.
Which certification do employers prefer?
Neither credential is universally "better." The better credential is the one you are eligible for, that your training program supports, and that the clinics you want actually list.
What hiring usually looks like in practice:
- Many outpatient and specialty clinic postings accept CCMA, CMA (AAMA), RMA, or equivalent national certification.
- Some hospital-affiliated or legacy HR templates still say "CMA." That often reflects recruiting from accredited college programs, not a written ban on NHA. Ask whether any NCCA-accredited MA credential is accepted.
- NHA CCMA is the higher-volume national exam. NHA administered 78,681 CCMA exams in 2024. AAMA's published window shows a much smaller annual CMA (AAMA) exam count. Volume is not the same as prestige, but it does mean more schools, more employers, and more working CCMAs in circulation.
- Pay is driven more by certified vs not certified, setting, and geography than by which body issued the card. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median wage of $44,200 for medical assistants in May 2024, with employment projected to grow 12% from 2024 to 2034 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
Most U.S. states do not issue a separate medical assistant license. Employers and clinic protocols decide which tasks you may perform. Washington and a few other jurisdictions have extra credentialing rules. Read your state and the job posting. Do not treat a national exam comparison as a license map.
How do recertification and lifetime paperwork compare?
Exam fee alone is a weak comparison. Renewal cadence is what you live with.
| CCMA (NHA) | CMA (AAMA) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle | Commonly 2 years | 60 months (5 years) |
| Typical CE | About 10 CE credits per cycle (confirm on NHA) | 60 CE units, with minimums across general, administrative, and clinical areas if recertifying by CE |
| Other option | Recertify per NHA rules (CE or re-exam as published) | Recertify by CE or by taking the CMA (AAMA) exam again |
| Expired credential | Follow current NHA reactivation rules | If expired more than three months, AAMA requires exam recertification rather than CE |
If you are eligible for CMA (AAMA) and you want fewer renewal cycles, the 60-month term is a real advantage. If you are not eligible, that advantage is irrelevant. CCMA's 2-year / 10-credit cycle is frequent but light if your employer already sponsors CE.
There is no conversion. A CCMA does not become a CMA (AAMA), and a CMA (AAMA) does not become a CCMA. Each body requires its own eligibility and exam.
What about RMA and NCMA?
They are additional national MA credentials, not nicknames for CCMA or CMA (AAMA).
- RMA (AMT): American Medical Technologists. Multiple routes, including education, longer work-experience, military, and instructor paths. Useful if you have years of on-the-job MA work and do not fit AAMA's accredited-program gate. Start at AMT medical assistant.
- NCMA (NCCT): National Center for Competency Testing. Often tied to NCCT partner schools.
If a posting lists several of these, the employer usually wants a current national credential. Pick the one you can sit for first. Do not collect four cards unless a specific employer requires a second one.
How should you choose in practice?
- Ask your program which exam they build the externship, voucher, and test date around.
- Check accreditation. Search your program on CAAHEP or ABHES if you are considering CMA (AAMA).
- Read 5 to 10 job postings you actually want. Note whether they name CCMA, CMA (AAMA), "nationally certified MA," or a specific body.
- Confirm eligibility documents on NHA or AAMA eligibility.
- Only then buy prep aligned to that blueprint.
If the answer is NHA CCMA, MedCertPrep's track is built for that exam: start at /ccma, take free CCMA practice, then use the CCMA study guide and How to pass the CCMA. Paid access is on Pricing.
If the answer is CMA (AAMA), use AAMA's content outline and an AAMA-aligned prep source. Do not treat NHA CCMA question banks as a substitute.
What changes in your study plan if you pick CCMA?
Study by the seven NHA domains and Clinical Patient Care subdomains, not by a generic "medical assistant textbook" chapter list.
Priority order from the CCMA study guide:
- Clinical Patient Care (56%): vitals, medication support, infection control, phlebotomy, EKG, lab/POC
- Foundational Knowledge (10%)
- Coordination, administrative, and communication domains (8% each)
- Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Law and Ethics (about 5% each)
High-yield MedCertPrep anchors:
- CCMA exam format and passing score
- Order of draw
- EKG lead placement
- Infection control
- Medication administration
- HIPAA and patient privacy
- Calendar: CCMA study plan (4 to 8 weeks)
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the CCMA the same as the CMA (AAMA)?
No. CCMA is an NHA credential. CMA (AAMA) is an AAMA credential. Different applications, different exams, different renewal rules. Passing one does not grant the other.
Which is harder, CCMA or CMA (AAMA)?
They are different tests. AAMA's published first-time pass rate in the July 2024 to April 2025 window was 69%. NHA reported an 81.38% CCMA pass rate across all 2024 administrations (not first-attempt only). Pass rates are not a difficulty ranking by themselves. Eligibility pools differ, and so do blueprints. Practice the exam you will actually take.
Do employers prefer CMA (AAMA) over CCMA?
Some traditional hospital-affiliated clinics prefer or historically recruited CMA (AAMA) graduates. Many outpatient employers accept CCMA, CMA (AAMA), or RMA equally. Read the posting. If it says only "CMA," ask whether they mean the AAMA credential or any national MA certification.
Can I take the CMA (AAMA) exam with work experience only?
Not as a standalone experience route. AAMA's published routes center on accredited-program graduation (or completing student status), prior CMA (AAMA) certification, educator status, or Alternative Pathway program criteria. Confirm on AAMA eligibility. NHA CCMA does publish a supervised work-experience pathway.
Does CCMA pay less than CMA (AAMA)?
No reliable national wage table splits medical assistant pay by NHA vs AAMA credential. Setting, state, overtime, and certified vs uncertified status matter more. Use BLS and local postings, not forum salary anecdotes, to budget.
Can I use CCMA prep for the CMA (AAMA) exam?
Not as a complete plan. Overlap exists in clinical and administrative knowledge, but domain weights, item style, timing rules, and eligibility paperwork differ. MedCertPrep's bank, mocks, and guides are mapped to the NHA CCMA test plan.
Are there other MA exams I should consider?
Yes, if your school or experience points there: RMA (AMT) and NCMA (NCCT) are separate national credentials. They still do not replace checking employer language and eligibility first.
Confirm eligibility, then take the next concrete step
Do this in order today:
- Write down your program's accreditation (CAAHEP, ABHES, other, or none) and which exam the school already scheduled.
- Check two target employers' credential language.
- Confirm CCMA details on the NHA CCMA page or CMA (AAMA) details on AAMA certification and AAMA eligibility.
- If CCMA is your path, confirm documents on CCMA requirements, then take a diagnostic on free CCMA practice.
- Map domains with the CCMA study guide and put dates on the CCMA study plan. When you want fuller timed access, see Pricing or the CCMA overview.
