How CNA testing works in Tennessee

- Tennessee uses Credentia for the NNAAP knowledge (or oral) exam and the skills evaluation under the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission (HFC). Start at the Credentia Tennessee test-taker page and open the Candidate Handbook articles for scheduling, fees, and eligibility.
- As of June 1, 2026, Credentia is the HFC nurse aide testing and registry vendor (replacing Headmaster / TMU). If you previously had a TMU account, create a new Credentia Platform account. Credentia materials state prior vendor data may carry over after you sign up.
- Knowledge exam (per the Tennessee Credentia Exam Overview; confirm live wording): typically 75 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, including 10 experimental items that do not count toward your score. Passing is typically 75% or better. An oral option with the same 75 questions is available.
- Skills Evaluation: you typically demonstrate five randomly selected skills within 30 minutes. You must perform all bold Critical Element Steps correctly and pass all five skills. Confirm the live Tennessee Skills Listing in the Credentia handbook.
- New nurse aide candidates commonly have three attempts for knowledge and three for skills within two years of completing an HFC-approved training program. After three failures on either part, or if the two-year window ends, you typically must retrain. Confirm live eligibility wording.
