Virginia CNA Skills Test: Credentia Evaluation, Critical Steps, and How to Prep
Virginia CNA skills evaluation: five skills, hand hygiene, measurement skills, Critical Element Steps, official Skills Listing links, and a rehearsal method that does not replace the Credentia handbook.
By MedCertPrep Team · Updated September 18, 2026
This guide is for Virginia nurse aide candidates preparing for the Credentia NNAAP Skills Evaluation. It explains how the Virginia skills exam is typically structured, what Critical Element Steps mean, how to rehearse without copying the official listing into flashcards, and where to open the live Credentia handbook pages. For state overview and official resource cards, start at Virginia CNA. For a national skills method that also covers Prometric pathways, use CNA skills test.
Virginia rules live in the Credentia Virginia Candidate Handbook. Confirm timing, attempt limits, and exact skill wording on Credentia Virginia test takers, then open The Skill Evaluation and the Official Skills Listing. For board and policy context, use the Virginia Board of Nursing. NNAAP national framing: NCSBN NNAAP & MACE.
What is the Virginia CNA skills test?
The Virginia skills evaluation is the hands-on half of NNAAP testing administered through Credentia. A Nurse Aide Evaluator watches you perform assigned skills against the Virginia Skills Listing. You must pass skills in addition to the written or oral exam. A strong written score does not save a failed skills demonstration.
Per Credentia Virginia handbook articles (verify live wording before exam day):
| Detail | Typical Virginia Credentia rule |
|---|---|
| Skills assigned | Five skills on the instruction card |
| Always included | Hand hygiene (hand washing) |
| Also included | One measurement skill (for example pulse, respirations, blood pressure, urinary output, or weight) |
| Remaining skills | Randomly selected from the Virginia Skills Listing |
| Time | About 30 minutes for all five (evaluator warns near the end of the window) |
| Passing bar | Complete all five skills satisfactorily; bold Critical Element Steps must be correct |
| Official steps | Skills Listing (Critical Element Steps in bold) |
This page summarizes the evaluation rules. It does not reprint the full skill checklist. Memorize steps from the official listing only.
Pro Tip: Print or bookmark the live Skill Evaluation and Skills pages. If a blog conflicts with Credentia, Credentia wins. Some Virginia listings note that electronic blood pressure may not be tested; confirm that note on the live Skills Listing before you rehearse.
Where do Virginia candidates get the official checklist?
Use this order:
- Open Credentia Virginia test takers
- Read Quick Reference for pathway and contact context
- Study The Skill Evaluation for room setup, timing, and correction policy
- Rehearse only the steps on Skills
- For written domain weights, use the 2024 NNAAP Written Content Outline (PDF) and Exam overview
Training programs can coach technique. The scored source is still the Credentia listing.
If a deep link does not open, start from Credentia Virginia test takers or the Virginia handbook home and find the current handbook article there.
How should you rehearse Virginia skills without copying the list?
Use a short three-layer plan:
- Shell habits: introduce yourself, explain, protect privacy, keep the call light in reach, and protect safety before every transfer. Details: CNA skills test.
- Always-on skills: drill hand hygiene and measurement recording until both are automatic.
- Timed mocks: pick four additional skills from the official Virginia Skills Listing, plus hand hygiene. Grade only against Credentia Critical Element Steps.
Support themes with written practice:
- Physical Care
- Role of the Nurse Aide
- Free diagnostic: Try CNA
What else matters on Virginia skills day?
- Arrive early; plan for a longer day because times are approximate
- Wear flat, non-skid shoes and clothing that can roll up as directed
- Perform skills in the order on your instruction card when possible
- Once you begin a new skill, you generally may not go back to correct a previous skill
- The evaluator will not coach you mid-skill or tell you whether a skill passed
- If you notice an error, say so, state which steps you will correct, then perform those steps
Attempt limits and retrain rules are handbook-specific. Confirm them in Exam results before you schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Virginia skills exam the same as Georgia Credentia?
Both use Credentia NNAAP structure (five skills, hand hygiene, measurement skill, Critical Element Steps). State Skills Listings can still differ on which skills appear and on notes such as electronic blood pressure. Always rehearse from the Virginia Skills Listing, not another state handbook.
Do I need to memorize every skill on the Virginia list?
Cover the full official Virginia Skills Listing. On test day you perform a subset, but remaining assigned skills are drawn from that list.
Can MedCertPrep replace the Credentia Skills Listing?
No. MedCertPrep teaches method and overlapping themes. Scored steps come only from Credentia / the Virginia handbook.
Next step for Virginia skills week
- Open Virginia CNA and bookmark the Skill Evaluation plus Skills Listing pages.
- Drill hand hygiene and one measurement skill until recording is automatic.
- Run two timed five-skill mocks graded only against Credentia Critical Element Steps.
- Support weak written themes in Physical Care while you keep the NNAAP outline nearby.
Virginia skills success is checklist fidelity under time pressure. Rehearse from Credentia, protect hand hygiene and Critical Element Steps, and use MedCertPrep for study structure around that official core.
