CPhT, PTCE, and PTCB: what each term actually means

Three initials show up in every search result for this topic. They are not interchangeable.

This guide covers eligibility and the certification path, not the exam-content domain also called Federal Requirements (DEA schedules, HIPAA, controlled-substance rules). That is what you study for the exam. This page is about whether you can sit for it.

What are the eligibility requirements for CPhT certification?

You need to meet four baseline requirements before you can apply. The current eligibility rules and documentation details are published on the PTCB CPhT certification page.

1. US residency: you must reside in the United States or its territories. Active members of the US military and their spouses can test abroad.
2. High school diploma or GED: a basic academic credential is required. A pharmacy degree is accepted in lieu of a training program.
3. Clean background disclosure: full disclosure of all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions is required. Felony convictions and disciplinary board actions do not automatically disqualify you, but omitting them does.
4. One of the two pathways below.

Pathway 1: PTCB-Recognized Education or Training Program

Complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (REP). PTCB publishes a searchable directory of recognized programs, including ASHP/ACPE-accredited programs, ABHES-accredited programs, and others that have passed PTCB's attestation process. You can apply up to 60 days before you finish the program. PTCB will not grant the CPhT credential until you submit proof of completion.

Pathway 2: Equivalent Work Experience (500 hours)

If you have worked as a pharmacy technician but did not complete a recognized program, this pathway applies. You need at least 500 hours of pharmacy technician work experience, completed before you submit your application. The hours can come from any timeframe.

How do you apply for CPhT certification?

The application process involves four steps:

1. Create a PTCB account at ptcb.org. Personal details, pathway selection, and documentation all go through this account.
2. Submit your application. Select your pathway (education or work experience), enter your details, disclose any conduct history, and sign the candidate agreement electronically.
3. Pay the $129 application fee. If your employer or school is sponsoring you, enter the voucher or sponsor information instead.
4. Wait for approval, then schedule. Standard applications process within 24 hours. Applications requiring a conduct review take 3 to 4 weeks. Once approved, you receive a 90-day authorization window to schedule and sit for the PTCE at a Pearson VUE test center.

What you need for exam day

Once PTCB approves your application and you have scheduled through Pearson VUE, exam-day preparation is mostly logistics and pacing readiness.

Exam shape: 90 questions (80 scored + 10 unscored), with a total time commitment of 2 hours (5-minute tutorial, 1 hour 50 minutes for the exam, 5-minute post-exam survey). The passing scaled score is 1,400 on a range of 1,000 to 1,600. Unofficial results appear on screen immediately after the survey; official results are posted to your PTCB account within three weeks. What are the CPhT renewal requirements?

Passing the PTCE earns you the CPhT credential. Keeping it requires action every two years.

CE providers include employer-sponsored programs, online platforms, and PTCB's own CE directory. Full renewal requirements, fee schedule, and CE guidance are on the PTCB renewal requirements page. Your employer may already cover most or all of the required hours. Check before purchasing outside CE. If you let the CPhT lapse, the reinstatement process is more involved than a standard renewal.

National CPhT vs state registration: what is the difference?

Many candidates are unaware that national certification and state registration are separate requirements. The CPhT is a national credential awarded by PTCB. Most states also impose their own registration or licensure requirement through the state board of pharmacy.

These are not the same thing. Some states treat national certification as sufficient. Others require a separate state registration, trainee permit, fingerprinting, or minimum age. A handful of states treat national certification as optional at the state level, though most employers in those states still require it. California uses its own state registration system entirely.

Check your state board of pharmacy website separately from your PTCB application. PTCB also publishes a State Regulations reference that maps technician requirements by state. Your employer's HR team can usually clarify which credentials they require on day one.

What is the difference between the PTCE and the CPhT?

The PTCE is the exam you take. The CPhT is the credential you earn by passing it and meeting PTCB's eligibility requirements. PTCB is the organization that administers both. You take the PTCE once per attempt to earn the CPhT, then renew the CPhT every two years through continuing education.

How long does PTCB take to approve your application?

Can I apply if I have not finished my training program yet?

Does the CPhT work in every state?

How much does it cost to become a CPhT?

The PTCB application fee is $129. This covers the application and one attempt at the PTCE. Retakes incur an additional fee. After you earn your CPhT, renewal costs $55 every two years on time, or $95 if you miss the deadline.

What CE is required to renew the CPhT?

Is the PTCE the only national pharmacy technician certification exam?

No. The NHA ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) is the main alternative. Both are nationally recognized. The PTCE costs $129 and is required or preferred by most hospital systems. The ExCPT costs $135 and is accepted by most retail pharmacy chains. If your employer or state board specifies one, follow their requirement.
