Utah CNA Skills Test: Headmaster Tasks, Key Steps, and How to Prep
Utah CNA skills test with Headmaster / D&SDT and UNAR: Candidate Handbook scoring, TMU scheduling links, key steps, Utah Nursing Assistant Registry notes, and a rehearsal method that does not replace the official Utah task list.
By MedCertPrep Team · Updated September 20, 2026
This guide is for Utah nurse aide candidates preparing for the Headmaster / D&SDT skills test administered with the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR). Utah is not Credentia NNAAP and not Prometric. For the state overview and official resource cards, start at Utah CNA. For a vendor-agnostic skills rehearsal method, use CNA skills test.
Confirm live task lists, timing, fees, and attempt rules in the current Utah Candidate Handbook PDF linked from utahcnaregistry.com. Schedule through the Utah TMU portal. Public lookup: Utah TMU registry search. Prefer UNAR and TMU as official entry points; Utah may not use a classic hdmaster.com state home page.
What is the Utah CNA skills test?
The skills test is the hands-on half of Utah competency evaluation. An RN Test Observer scores you against the Utah handbook skill tasks. You must pass skills in addition to the knowledge exam (typically 75 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours; pass typically 75% or 57 of 75 per handbook materials).
Per the UNAR / Headmaster Utah Candidate Handbook (verify the latest PDF before exam day):
| Detail | Typical Utah Headmaster / UNAR rule |
|---|---|
| Vendor | D&SDT-Headmaster partnered with UNAR |
| Knowledge exam | About 75 questions, 2 hours, pass typically 75%+ (57/75) |
| Skills day | Typically 5 random skills in about 45 minutes |
| Skills scoring | Commonly 80% on each skill plus 100% of key steps |
| Attempts | Commonly up to 3 attempts on each exam part |
| Pass window | Commonly about 1 year from training to pass both parts |
| Scheduling | Utah TMU after your record and fees are complete |
| Registry | UNAR for certification, renewal, and reciprocity |
| Official steps | Current handbook skill-task list (do not use another state's checklist) |
This page does not reprint the Utah skill checklist. Memorize steps from the live handbook only.
Pro Tip: Handbook versions change. Always download the PDF currently linked from utahcnaregistry.com before you rehearse. Keep UNAR certification steps on your checklist at the same time as TMU scheduling.
Where do Utah candidates get the official checklist?
- Open Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR)
- Download the current Candidate Handbook
- Complete demographics and payment in Utah TMU
- Rehearse only the skill tasks printed in that handbook
- After you pass both parts, follow UNAR certification and renewal steps, and check status on TMU public search
For knowledge-exam subject counts, use the handbook subject table and the mapping on Utah CNA.
How should you rehearse Utah skills?
- Shell habits: introduce yourself, explain, protect privacy, keep the call light in reach, and protect safety before every transfer. Details: CNA skills test.
- Key steps first: key steps fail the skill if missed. Drill those until automatic, then protect the 80% overall skill threshold.
- Timed mocks: run 5 random skills within about 45 minutes, graded only against Utah handbook wording.
Support overlapping knowledge themes:
- Physical Care
- Psychosocial Care
- Role of the Nurse Aide
- Free diagnostic: Try CNA

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Utah CNA the same as NNAAP / Credentia?
No. Utah uses Headmaster / UNAR subject areas and a Utah-specific skills task list. MedCertPrep national practice overlaps on themes but is not a Headmaster clone bank.
How many attempts do I get in Utah?
Handbook materials commonly allow up to 3 attempts on each exam part and about 1 year from training completion to pass both parts. Confirm live wording in the current UNAR handbook.
Can MedCertPrep replace the Utah handbook?
No. MedCertPrep teaches method and overlapping themes. Scored steps and subject weights come only from UNAR / Headmaster materials.
Next step for Utah skills week
- Open Utah CNA and download the current UNAR handbook.
- Drill key steps until they are automatic, then protect the 80% skill threshold.
- Run two timed five-skill mocks graded only against Utah handbook wording.
- Support weak knowledge themes using the subject map on Utah CNA.
Utah skills success is handbook fidelity under time pressure. Rehearse from UNAR, protect key steps, and use MedCertPrep for study structure around that official core.
